NEW DMR SYSTEM

Launch of a new Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) communications system for all emergency services across the county, (10/28/25)

Fentress County Transitioning to New Digital Emergency Radio System to Improve Public Safety Communications Jamestown, TN — 10-28-2025 — Fentress County officials are proud to announce the launch of a new Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) communications system for all emergency services across the county, marking a major advancement in public safety technology and reliability.

For years, first responders in Fentress County have relied on aging VHF analog radio system that has struggled to meet the growing demands of modern emergency communications. Due to the county’s rugged terrain and vast rural areas, the current system has experienced dead zones, dropped transmissions, and inconsistent signal coverage, posing challenges for emergency personnel responding to calls in critical areas.

“These communication gaps created serious safety concerns for both our responders and the citizens we serve,” said Daniel Coleman, Fentress County EMS Director. “When seconds count, clear and reliable communication can be the difference between life and death. This upgrade ensures we can better protect our community.”

The new digital radio system offers: • Expanded countywide coverage with stronger and more reliable signal quality, which has been tested in hard to cover areas with the old system. • Clearer audio even in high-noise environments and at longer distances. • Improved interoperability among EMS, Fire, Law Enforcement, 911 Dispatch, Emergency Management, and Rescue. • Scalability for future growth as technology and public safety needs evolve.

The project is part of an ongoing countywide effort to modernize emergency communications and ensure that Fentress County remains ready to meet increasing demands during severe weather, major events, and large-scale emergencies.

“We are grateful for the teamwork between Fentress County Fire, EMS, Law Enforcement, Emergency Management, Fentress County 911, and our local government officials for making this project a reality,” said Jimmy Johnson, Fentress County Executive. “This upgrade represents a major investment in the safety and future of Fentress County.” County officials have already completed extensive field testing of the new digital channels, which have shown significantly improved coverage and reliability compared to the old system. The implementation process is now underway across all emergency departments. With Fentress County EMA being the first agency to switch to the system. Again, this improvement is completed to improve radio coverage for our responders, citizens, and visitors of Fentress County. With hopes of moving the emergency communication capabilities into the next generation.
